Zelda Revisited Review

A super super nice write-up of my piece 'Zelda Revisited' on the Hobart blog today.

It makes me excited to know that people are excited about my Nintendo pieces--the world of 8-bit Nintendo games is such a particular and shared narrative and part of the joy is talking to people about their own videogame experiences:  their favorite games, what they loved about them, moments when they finally beat a particular level, etc.  I could listen to those stories for ages.

Anyway, major thanks to Aaron Burch for such a kind and thoughtful review.

Hotel Amerika

super-mario-bros-3.e_01Tanookies,

My piece 'Super Mario Bros. 3' has been selected for publication in Hotel Amerika.  Such a huge honor--Hotel Amerika is a beautiful (and glossy!  glossy!) magazine with some amazing and wild writing and I'm very honored to be a part of such a cool publication.  Also, you can get their publication at Barnes & Noble, and so Patricia O is PSYCHED.  An early Mother's Day gift, perhaps, especially considering my mom sacrificed herself and suffered through intense cat allergies so I could play the game for the first time at my friend Justin's place.  It's the least I can do.

Caketrain

Red Velvets,

My piece 'No Parasol Stars' has been selected for publication in Caketrain.

Caketrain is a beautiful beautiful magazine with some really incredible writing--my friend Colleen Hollister was published there a little while back.

The piece is my 'Bubble Bobble' piece, which was a pretty spectacular game--not to mention incredibly frustrating.  I'm pretty sure my patient demure is from playing Bubble Bobble.

Many thanks to Joseph Reed who had some really great edits (and suggested the new title).  He's been awesome to work with--so many thanks to him and Amanda Raczkowski as well.

Zelda Revisited

I did this with the Simon's Quest piece as well--I think I'll probably wind up doing this for all of the Nintendo pieces that get published.  Turns out pretty creepy/delightful.  Many thanks to those who have already spread the love.

WebConjunctions

Legend_of_Zelda_2_The_Adventure_of_Link_NES_ScreenShot4

My piece 'Zelda Revisited' (based on Legend of Zelda II:  Link's Adventure) is up for your reading pleasure on WebConjunctions.

I can't tell you how psyched this makes me.  I love love love Conjunctions and I've learned to adore this piece, which is the second one that I wrote in the Nintendo essay collection I've been working on (currently titled 'Leave Luck To Heaven').  Micaela Morrissette was really wonderful to interact with and was helpful with some edits.  I'm really honored.

Beeswax Magazine

indexbeeHive,

The new issue of Beeswax Magazine arrived in the mail the other day which included my piece 'Ms. Pacman Strategy/Pattern Guide'.

The issue is beautiful and has a really nice letter press cover.  I'm also in there with Alabama alum and friend David Brennan.  In fact, the piece that he submitted I did a reading of (I, of course, played Brennan).  Confused?  Of course you are.  Just know that it was awesome to see it in there.

The piece that's in there was the first piece I wrote in Tuscaloosa, back in 2005.  It was really cool to give it a home, as it was the first piece of writing I was really proud of and kept returning to.  It's like I gave it a final resting place or something.

All in all, a great magazine and a pretty lovely day.  I wrote a poem and got a cupcake for it.  I wish life was like that.

Stymie Magazine

25290_799572787835_27417965_44652669_5049381_nBallaz,

Stymie Magazine is live!  My piece 'A Brief History of the New York Mets:  A Mixtape' is in the new issue.

The picture above is of ESPN:  The Magazine where Erik Smetana, the editor of Stymie was asked to judge a contest for ESPN where they would publish the winner.  Included in the article were some excerpts from the issue as well as the cover of the newest issue, which has my name on it.

So, therefore, I finally made it in ESPN:  The Magazine.  A lifelong dream achieved via loophole, but achieved nonetheless.  Rad.

Pank Magazine

PANKlogo

Darlings,

My piece O Self-Extracting Executable is forthcoming in the newest issue of Pank Magazine.  Super psyched to be in this issue as I've admired the magazine (and the work of editor Roxane Gay) for quite some time.  Right on.  Journal should be out in the fall and will include the work of my friend Rachel Adams as well.  Huzzah!  Alabama, we run this.
