300 Reviews

Screen shot 2009-11-18 at 12.33.46 AM

I know I've posted on this before, but I just wanted to direct your attention to how much 300 Reviews has grown over the past few weeks.

For those unfamiliar, it's a website where a plethora of things are reviewed, from Lemon-Lime Drinks to Breast-Feeding, all in about 300 words.  The format is extremely liberating and fun--lots of great writers have gotten in on the act, including some good friends, such as Laurence Ross, Luke Southworth, Jennifer Ridgeway, Daniela Olszewska, Jeremy Hawkins, Alissa Nutting, and Carl Peterson.

Of course, don't take my word for it, take this guy's.

I've contributed a great deal, so if you want to hear my take on the movie 300, New Jersey's own George Washington Annual Christmas Crossing Reenactment, Acqua di Giò pour Homme, or The Stairmaster, all in approximately 300 words, well, you've come to the right spot.

Double Shiny

Kittens:

My piece 'Virus Definition 1' is forthcoming in Double Shiny.  My friend Matt Mahaney is the head guru over there and he has some really neat pieces up currently from Emily Kendall Frey as well as Peter Conners, and so I'm honored to be in the newest issue.  Also, Matt is very good at table tennis and routinely makes me look silly in basketball.

Slash Pine Poetry Festival 2010

Screen shot 2010-02-15 at 4.35.31 PMLumberjacks and jills,

On April 24th, I will be giving a reading at the Slash Pine Poetry Festival in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

I love giving readings.  One of the things that Slash Pine has done so well in its short existence is find spectacular and unorthodox places to read:  a reading hike through the woods, an antique train museum, etc.  I did a reading with Slash Pine back in September in a creepy attic above a bookstore in Birmingham.

My reading will take place at the Bama Theater on 600 Greensboro Avenue at 10:30pm.  Burn the midnight oil with me and some awesome writers.

Stymie Magazine

Sluggers,

My piece 'The Futility of the New York Mets:  A Mixtape' is forthcoming in the Spring/Summer '10 issue of Stymie Magazine.  Many thanks to Erik Smetana for working with me on the piece and for being an awesome dude in general.

Stymie Magazine is a sports related magazine, and everyone who knows me knows that there's fewer things I love more than poet-athletes.  Athlete-poets are okay too.  There will be some pretty awesome work in there from Sean Lovelace, Cynthia Hawkins, and Daniel Orozco (rad!) amongst others.

The piece was originally a lecture I wrote for the Gould's Lecture Series here in Tuscaloosa and so I am happy that it has found such a cool home.

Not to mention the cover!  I know, right!?

That's a Katholieke Universiteit-Leuven headband for those keeping track.  Take a seat of wisdom while I dunk on you.  Erasmus went there and so did I, so I got that going for me.  Go Lions.  Tot zeins!

Dislocate

My piece 'c:\run iliad.exe' has been selected for publication by Dislocate Magazine out of the University of Minnesota.

In addition, it was a finalist for their 'Contaminated Essay' contest and so I am proud and honored to be selected as a finalist (along with my good friend Katie Jean Shinkle!  Alabama--we run this).

Many thanks to the editors at Dislocate, especially non-fiction editor David LeGault.

As a side note, this was the piece that I wrote that eventually turned into my book-length project 'i/o', so it's extra special to get this piece placed somewhere.

Web Conjunctions

zelda2zeldaLittle Monsters,

My piece 'Zelda Revisited' has been selected for publication in Web Conjunctions.  It is a huge honor to be in this magazine, as I consider both the print and the online versions of Conjunctions to produce absolutely spectacular material.  Many thanks to all of the editors, especially Bradford Morrow.

Also, many thanks to my friend Luke Southworth who suggested that I send this piece to Conjunctions in the first place.  The man would know; his excellent story Same Life/Different One was published there a while back.  Definitely scope it out.

The Nintendo essay project is coming along nicely; I've written nine essays so far--goal is to write seven more for 16 (or two 8-bit sections) and send them out as a collection.  We shall see.  They've been a lot of fun to write; I know that much.  I hope they are fun to read as well.

I hope you've been keeping up with your 300 Reviews!  Lots of great stuff going on over there.
